It takes a lot of work to build a food festival! First the ground has to be marked out ready; a fleet of enormous lorries then make their way over to Sandringham from the Midlands, carrying fencing, mobile toilets and lots and lots of marquees. The marquee sides have all been pressure washed in the yard over the last few weeks so are bright and sparkly ready.
Then the marquees start to go up. We have the most fantastic team of marquee-putter-uppers ever! They work tirelessly making sure they are safe and secure. Then they are checked. Then they are checked again. The smaller shedding tents go up and the portaloos are put in place. It’s starting to take shape!
Toward the end of this week, more lorries arrive with bins, sound equipment, staging, the kitchens and all the refrigeration equipment, which again our tireless team have to put in the right places. Security start patrolling – and their dogs love this bit with lots of wonderful Sandringham walks between duties. Signs go up around the area directing exhibitors and visitors to the right place.
Thursday/Friday our exhibitors arrive: the fun fair rides arrive and the big fun house is put into place; traders start coming and setting up their stalls; the bar staff add their backdrops and bar areas and satellite tents. There’s suddenly a real buzz about the place. People look anxiously at the sky and discuss forecasts. We gather in the bar tent and catch up with old friends.
By Friday night we are about ready to roll!
The musicians and chefs arrive early Saturday morning; the team is in place on the gate; staff arrive for various food stands; the candyfloss is made; the taster sausages are starting to smell delicious; there are trays of fudge I need to walk past quickly; the chainsaw carvers start carving their masterpieces; the musicians are tuning up; the sun is shining…
See you there!
